within a city are a specific place

a lot on the website or yes

and pearl
is something beautiful and that can amaze you
and pearl makes it small

such as the Eiffel Tower
or the cathedral tower in Utrecht

but nowadays it is quite difficult I think
to find hidden gems
yeah on the internet
everyone uses
certain
hashtags or things to look for the secrets
or the best secrets of a city
both places outside and restaurants or

to find hidden gems

to look for these hidden gems

anyone who comes to town wants to go to this place

so for me it kinda takes the magic away
of many places so
so I always try to go to less
touristy places to go or lesser known places
but yes in many situations
the tourist spots are
also just very beautiful or very unique
so yes I understand that people want to see that too

how if you go somewhere
do you look it up in advance
or do you go without a plan
going somewhere
yes outside the Netherlands
the previous long journey
or longer trip I made was to Mexico
and then
I used the going Dutch community
because I asked a question
to people who come from Mexico or they have some
tips for places
and I have found a lot of fun
spots
so that yes that is always
a good idea to use a bit
your own network
maybe ask around a bit if there is
someone from that specific country coming up with some nice tips
that's always fun I think
and yes yes so asking the local people
yes exactly and in your own country
of course it works a bit like that
so yeah
if you can find someone from a specific city or region
who can give some tips
because I think you will only find out the hidden gems
if you are for a longer time
in one place
and a little tired of the tourist spots
maybe and then discover your own

but I also have another idea for hidden gems
how I experienced that
and that is going somewhere without a plan
nor look for the greatest
most beautiful thing there is but just walk around and get lost

unknown travel and then at the airport

I did that once
and I really like that surprise
so the surprise alone makes it
actually totally fun
and then we ended up in Prague
I think it was for 4 days
then you will not receive any instructions
what to pack
so you have warm clothes
and winter clothing and summer clothing or rainwear

but it was great fun
the surprise itself actually
yes where you go yes exactly yes it
the problem with doing that with the trains in the Netherlands
is that you maybe
maybe end in Almere or so and yes
yes yes you can you may not get very far then
no but yes I think every city has something
unique every village has something unique
one city is more beautiful than the other
but yes i was
yesterday for example in venendaal and that is
yes the city itself is
I don't like it that much
but the area around it is very beautiful
with many forests
and beautiful nature
so yes there is always
something special to find
or in the city itself or around it
so yes and do you find hidden
gems rather something in nature
or more
culturally a museum or a monument
what is for you
a gem often yes I think
The Netherlands is not really known for a spectacular
nature of course
so in the Netherlands it might be more
related to the cities
but yes that makes it fun to
discover a beautiful new park or nature reserve
but yes in in
other countries with beautiful beaches or something
you often have yes
some very popular beaches
but then you sometimes finding another beach
which is also super pretty
but where there are almost
no people
yes that i like that i like to discover yes
yes so yes it differs a bit on the
place the city the

yes for me also when it comes to an
alley you can walk through
for example in Gouda or in Schiedam
you really have a lot of alleys in the city center
which you can go through
and they used to be all or
closed the alleys
and now many of them have been opened again

feel like walking through the city

for me I think of rooftops

yes go from the city to the palace gardens
so yes those are nice

that's the magical thing about the

between some houses in a bit hidden
also very nice park
and nice to sit for a while

it is not completely full

say Randstad cities
do you have a city within the Netherlands that you see as a
hidden gem
well I have yet to discover them

outside the Randstad
been to many places in the Netherlands

is definitely my plan to do that more often

we often do some excursion days during the year as well

2 weeks ago to Texel for the summer school

excursion to different cities

was surprised so I've been there and I thought
wow i didn't expect this
would be such a beautiful city

so yes on the radar now for example Haarlem
now that one is well known
I think many people have been there
but also Alkmaar in North Holland
is a very beautiful city I think
and a little more in the east of the Netherlands you have Deventer
so it is located along the IJssel
and along the IJssel you have several beautiful cities
Deventer Zutphen
Zwolle of course also
those are all 3
beautiful cities with a very old town too
so those are nice places to visit
and not so big the cities
so you can easily go to the center
walk everywhere
and I think that is also very nice that you can get a little
lost in the center
maybe come across a nice cafe
or an interesting museum
and often the church is also very impressive

so have you been there
and you thought that was a beautiful city
to do the next field trip but why
what can be found there
well Alkmaar is a very old city
and of course there are several old cities in the Netherlands

then you think of very narrow alleys
houses that are a bit crooked and stuff
and yes you have that in the center of Alkmaar
so yes and a lot of history within the city
so I think that's an interesting mix with
besides that it has a lot of history
it also has a lot of cheese
it is one of the cheese cities in the Netherlands
so you always have the cheese market on Friday
only yes there outside that cheese market
that's more of a show
you have also
the cheese museum and many cheese shops and yes

interesting places to discover within the city
ah okay well I'm curious if we can do that yes
so often with such a
field trip day we have a bit of a mix of some kind of tour
of the city
but yes actually it is also a kind of self tour
that people have to do
so they often get some assignments
to complete
and through those assignments you also get to know the city
but yes you should actually also talk to people
looking for things on the street
for example, you are not allowed to use a telephone
to find certain locations
so yes it is a very interactive way
to get to know the city and of course
to practice your Dutch
so yes
maybe people have another suggestion for a
nice city to go to
then they can share that in the comments

hoe is het vandaag
het gaat goed en met jou
met mij ook vandaag praten we over verborgen pareltjes
maar wat is een verborgen pareltje eigenlijk
ja ik denk het is een beetje het tegenovergestelde van een
toeristische trekpleister
misschien een hele toeristische plek
ja of een hele toeristische stad ook
dus ik denk een verborgen pareltje kan
ja of eigenlijk een hele stad zijn of een heel dorp
of een regio
maar het kan natuurlijk ook
binnen een stad zijn een specifieke plek
die ja nou niet zo populair is niet zo ja
veel op de website staat of op ja
toeristische boekjes etcetera
ja precies
verborgen inderdaad betekent natuurlijk geheim
en dat het niet zichtbaar is
en parel
is iets wat mooi is en wat je kan laten verwonderen
en pareltje maakt het klein
dus vaak ook iets wat niet zo groot is
zoals bijvoorbeeld de Eiffeltoren
of de dom toren in Utrecht
ja
maar inderdaad iets wat nog niet zo goed ontdekt is
maar tegenwoordig is het vrij moeilijk denk ik om
verborgen pareltjes te vinden
ja op internet
gebruikt iedereen
bepaalde
hashtags of dingen om te zoeken naar de geheimen
of de beste geheimen van een stad
zowel plekken buiten als restaurants of
winkeltjes waar je naartoe moet
maar hoe doe jij het
vind jij het wel belangrijk om ook
als je toerist bent verborgen pareltjes
te vinden
ja zeker het is natuurlijk altijd leuk
ik denk de meeste mensen willen
op zoek naar deze verborgen pareltjes
maar ja dat wordt ook wel steeds moeilijker
maar ook niet iedereen denk ik
als je bijvoorbeeld in het centrum van Amsterdam
rondloopt dan zijn er voor specifieke winkels
of ja restaurants
staat er altijd een lange rij buiten
omdat dit echt de ja de TikTok hypes zijn zeg maar
dus ja dat dat gaat heel snel en dan
iedereen die naar de stad komt wil dan naar deze plek
om het te zien
om het te proberen
dus voor mij haalt het een beetje de magie weg
van veel plekken dus
dus ik probeer altijd om naar wat minder
toeristische plekken te gaan of minder bekende plekken
maar ja in in heel veel situaties
zijn de toeristische plekken
ook gewoon heel mooi of heel uniek
dus ja ik snap het wel dat mensen dat willen zien ook
ja en wacht wat wat was je vraag
ik ben ja hoe doe je dat dan
hoe als je ergens naartoe gaat
ga zoek jij het dan op van tevoren
of ga je op de bonnenfooi zonder plan
ergens naartoe
ja buiten Nederland
de vorige lange reis
of langere reis die ik heb gemaakt was naar Mexico
en toen
heb ik gebruik gemaakt van de going Dutch community
want ik had een vraag gesteld
aan mensen die uit Mexico komen of ze wat
tips hebben voor plekken
en daar heb ik heel veel leuke
ja plekjes voor gekregen
dus dat ja dat is altijd
een goed idee om een beetje
in je eigen netwerk
misschien een beetje rond te vragen of er
iemand uit dat specifieke land komt met wat leuke tips
dat is altijd leuk denk ik
en ja ja de lokale mensen dus vragen
ja precies en in je eigen land
werkt dat natuurlijk ook een beetje zo
dus ja
als je iemand kan vinden uit een specifieke stad of regio
die wat tips kan geven
want ik denk je komt pas achter de verborgen pareltjes
als je voor een langere tijd
op een plek bent
en een beetje moe bent van de toeristische plekken
misschien en dan vanzelf je eigen
pareltjes ontdekt zeg maar ja
ja ik ben het daar wel mee eens
maar ik heb ook een ander idee voor verborgen pareltjes
hoe ik dat heb ervaren
en dat is ergens naartoe gaan zonder plan
en ook niet op zoek gaan naar het grootste
mooiste wat er is maar gewoon rondlopen en verdwalen
en dan iets tegenkomen en
soms moet je wel geduld hebben en
hopen dat er inderdaad nog iets te vinden is wat
wat je kan doen
maar dan ben je
zie kom je ineens een leuk restaurant tegen of een klein
ja bijzonder
monumentje of zo
en dat is dan een dat verborgen pareltje waar
je achter bent gekomen zelf
dus dat je het zelf hebt ontdekt
dat is voor mij het leukste aan een verborgen
pareltje vinden
dat je totaal geen idee hebt
wat je kan tegenkomen
en daarnaast denk ik
bedenk ik nu dat je ook eigenlijk in Nederland
gewoon naar een stad kan gaan en
iemand aan kan spreken en vragen
wat vind jij nou leuk hier
of wat is nou het verborgen pareltje in deze buurt
en op die manier erachter komen
wat is daar te doen en te vinden
dus misschien moeten we dat weer een keer doen
ook met going Dutch
gewoon
een dobbelsteen inpakken en dan op een station staan
en dan gooien we gewoon de dobbelsteen
en die bepaalt waar we naartoe gaan
welk station welk peron
welke afslag
en dan op zoek gaan naar een verborgen pareltje
leuk ja
ja je hebt dit ook met met vluchten
toch dat mensen een soort reis
onbekende reisboeken en dan op het vliegveld
pas te horen krijgen waar ze precies naartoe gaan
ja ja dat vind ik zo leuk
ik heb dat een keer gedaan
en ik hou echt van die verrassing
dus alleen al de verrassing maakt het
eigenlijk helemaal leuk
en we zijn toen beland in Praag
voor 4 dagen was het volgens mij
dan krijg je geen instructies over
wat je in moet pakken
dus je hebt warme kleding
en winterkleding en zomerkleding of regenkleding
bij ja
maar het was heel leuk
de verrassing zelf eigenlijk
ja waar je naartoe gaat ja precies ja het
het probleem met dat doen met de treinen in Nederland
is dat je misschien
misschien eindigt in Almere of zo en ja
ja ja je kan je komt niet misschien heel ver dan
nee maar ja ik denk tuurlijk elke stad heeft iets
unieks elke dorp heeft iets iets unieks
de ene stad is wat mooier dan de ander
maar ja ik was
gister bijvoorbeeld in venendaal en dat is
ja de stad zelf is
vind ik niet zo mooi
maar het gebied daar omheen is heel erg mooi
met veel bossen
en mooie natuur
dus ja er is altijd wel
iets bijzonders te vinden
of in de stad zelf of eromheen
dus ja en vind jij verborgen
pareltje dan eerder iets in de natuur
of meer
cultureel een museum of een monument
wat is voor jou een
een pareltje vaak ja ik denk
Nederland staat niet echt bekend om een spectaculaire
natuur natuurlijk
dus in Nederland is het misschien meer
gerelateerd aan de steden
maar ja daardoor is het ook juist leuk om
een mooi nieuw park te ontdekken of natuurgebied
maar ja in in
andere landen met bijvoorbeeld mooie stranden of zo dan
heb je vaak ja
een aantal hele populaire stranden
maar dan vind je soms een ander strand
wat ook supermooi is
maar waar bijna
geen mensen zijn
ja dat dat vind ik dat vind ik leuk om te ontdekken ja
ja dus ja het verschilt een beetje aan de
plek de stad de
het land ja ja
ja voor mij ook als het gaat om een
steegje waar je doorheen kan lopen
bijvoorbeeld in Gouda of in Schiedam
heb je echt heel veel steegjes in de binnenstad
waar je dan doorheen kan
en vroeger waren die allemaal of
dichtgemaakt de steegjes
en nu zijn er veel van die weer opengemaakt
om ook een beetje dat verborgen
gevoel te hebben om door de stad te kunnen lopen
en dat vind ik ook een leuke ervaring
en als je dat zijn de kleine steden eigenlijk
maar als je aan de grotere steden denkt
voor mij denk ik dan ook aan rooftops
of dakterrassen
waar je van waar je een heel mooi uitzicht hebt
maar die niet zo populair zijn als de meest populaire
of grote
bar van de stad maar een klein ja
hotel waar toevallig ook een rooftop of een
dakterras is waar je dan
ineens een heel mooi uitzicht hebt op de stad
ja ja zeker
dus in wat grotere steden
heb je ook vaak een wijk of een kant
een regio waar waar je woont en waar je vaak bent
en bijvoorbeeld voor mij
ik woon in West Amsterdam
en ik kom niet zo vaak in Oost of in Noord
dus ja soms als je daar
toevallig moet zijn of zo
en wat tijd hebt en een beetje ontdekt
dan vind je ineens ja nieuwe restaurants of cafés of een
een park dat je denkt
oh dit is ook leuk om naartoe te gaan
dus dat kan ook
het kan ook binnen je eigen stad natuurlijk
ja ja en met een
een going Dutch community
excursie gingen we een keer naar Den Haag
en daar heb jij ook een verborgen
pareltje laten zien van dat kleine
restaurantje waar je die Italiaanse broodjes kan halen
en ik droom nog steeds af en toe van dat broodje
omdat het zo
lekker was en zo'n klein zaakje dacht ik al
dit is echt zo'n verborgen pareltje voor mij
ja precies ja
ik dacht eigenlijk dat je ging
ging praten over de geheime deur in
oh ja in Den Haag dus ja ik weet niet ja
of mensen
veel in Den Haag zijn of dat ze misschien daar wonen
maar ja je hebt bij het paleis Noordeinde
in Den Haag heb je aan de achterkant een soort
geheime deur waar je op een knop kan drukken
om de Marechaussee te bellen zodat ze de deur opendoen
nou volgens mij
ja gaat het automatisch
maar het
het voelt toch een beetje als een geheime doorgang
en dan ja kom je zo eigenlijk
ja van de stad naar de paleistuinen
dus ja dat dat zijn wel leuke
leuke dingetjes natuurlijk
precies ja dat vond
dat is het magische aan de de
de kleine dingen die je niet meteen weet inderdaad
je hebt ook in Den Haag de spreukenroute
vanaf het station
naar een ja het is een lange weg met 33 talen
verschillende
uitspraken of uitdrukkingen geschreven
dat vind ik ook kleine dingen waar je misschien
langs loopt of
als je niet kijkt met je ogen
goed als je om je heen kijkt
dan dan zie je het niet maar als je goed kijkt
kan je ze wel vinden en dat
daar zitten denk ik heel veel dingen in de steden
ook de geschiedenis of
andere ja elementen van
van kunst die je
die je niet snel kan zien met het blote oog
maar wel als je goed oplet
of als je goed aanwezig bent tijdens een wandeling
kan je die ontdekken
ja en ik denk dat Rotterdam ook wel veel van dat soort
soort van verborgen kunsten heeft binnen de stad
het is natuurlijk ook een stuk moderner
dan de meeste andere steden
ja maar ook ja wat meer straatkunst
door de stad heen verborgen zeg maar
ja ja en bijvoorbeeld ook de de de de graffiti de
de muurschilderingen
ja ja
zijn die zijn midden in de stad gemaakt maar wel
ja waar waar je dus normaal langs loopt
maar wel heel mooi als je erbij stil staat eigenlijk
en hetzelfde geld denk ik ook voor Amsterdam
daar zijn zoveel verhalen
in de muren
in de in de straten geschreven
ja precies
ja ik ben even de naam kwijt
maar je hebt bijvoorbeeld ook een binnenplaatsje
ergens wat
ja waar vroeger zeg maar nonnen woonden
maar wat nu
ja gewoon woningen zijn voor mensen zelf
maar het is ook een soort van
ja klein tuintje
tussen wat wat huizen in een beetje verborgen
ook maar heel mooi parkje
en fijn om even te zitten
en ja die zie je niet zo snel
dus je moet wel weten dat het daar zit
en en dat is nog geen TikTok hype dus
het zit niet helemaal vol
ja precies
ja en buiten de
zeg maar Randstad steden
heb je een stad binnen Nederland die jij ziet als een
verborgen pareltje
nou ja ik moet ze nog ontdekken
zo je weet het misschien al ik ben nog niet veel
buiten de Randstad
in Nederland geweest op veel plekken
en daar dat is dus nog iets wat ik heel graag wil doen
en de komende zomer
is zeker mijn plan om dat vaker te doen
Uhm
vooral doe ik dat graag in het
heb ik dat altijd in het buitenland gedaan
maar ik denk dat dit jaar
ja
heb jij tips eigenlijk welke steden kan ik ontdekken
genoeg ja dus
we doen vaak in het jaar een aantal excursiedagen ook
nou we zijn
2 weken geleden op Texel geweest voor de zomerschool
dat was natuurlijk meerdere
dagen ook
en nou ook wat intensiever voor de mensen
de studenten
maar we doen ook vaak een dag
excursie naar verschillende steden
en ja vaak zijn dit ook steden waar ik dan
verrast was dus ik ben daar geweest en ik dacht
wow ik had niet verwacht dat dit
zo een mooie stad zou zijn
Uhm
dus ja op de op de radar nu staan bijvoorbeeld Haarlem
nou die is wel wat bekender
ik denk veel mensen zijn daar wel geweest
maar ook Alkmaar in Noord Holland
is een hele mooie stad vind ik
en wat meer in het oosten van Nederland heb je Deventer
dus die ligt langs de IJssel
en langs de IJssel heb je meerdere mooie steden
Deventer Zutphen
Zwolle natuurlijk ook
dat zijn alle 3
mooie steden met een hele oude binnenstad ook
dus dat zijn leuke plekken om te bezoeken
en niet zo groot de steden
dus je kan heel makkelijk in het centrum
overal naartoe lopen
en dat is denk ik ook heel leuk dat je een beetje kan
verdwalen in het centrum
misschien een leuk cafeetje tegenkomt
of een interessant museum
en vaak is de kerk ook heel indrukwekkend
dus
dat zijn een paar ideeën
ja nou ik kijk uit naar de excursie
en en jij zei laatst over Alkmaar
ben je daar dus geweest
en dat vond je dus wel een mooie stad om
de volgende excursie te doen maar waarom
wat is daar te vinden
nou ja Alkmaar is een hele oude stad
en er zijn natuurlijk meerdere oude steden in Nederland
alleen ja als je als ik aan een echte oude stad denk
overal ter wereld dus bijvoorbeeld ook in Italië of zo
dan denk je aan hele smalle steegjes
huisjes die een beetje scheef staan en zo
en ja dat heb je in het centrum van Alkmaar ook
dus ja en veel historie binnen de stad
dus dat is een denk ik een interessante mix ook met
naast dat het veel historie heeft
heeft het ook veel kaas
het is een van de de kaas steden van Nederland zeg maar
dus je hebt op vrijdag altijd de kaasmarkt
alleen ja daar buiten die kaasmarkt

interessante plekjes om te ontdekken binnen de stad
ah oké nou ik ben benieuwd of we dat kunnen doen ja
dus vaak met zo'n
excursiedag hebben we een beetje een mix van een soort tour
van de stad
maar ja eigenlijk is het ook een soort zelf tour
die mensen moeten doen
dus ze krijgen vaak een aantal opdrachten
om te voltooien
en door die opdrachten leer je de stad ook kennen
maar ja je moet eigenlijk ook praten met mensen
op straat dingen zoeken
je mag bijvoorbeeld geen telefoon
gebruiken om bepaalde locaties te vinden
dus ja het is een hele interactieve manier
om de stad te leren Kennen en natuurlijk ook
om je Nederlands te oefenen
dus dus ja
misschien hebben mensen nog een suggestie voor een
leuke stad om naartoe te gaan
dan kunnen ze dat delen in de comments
ja
en dan kunnen we samen op zoek gaan naar de verborgen
pareltjes in die stad
precies ja
genoeg te ontdekken
en het is ook altijd leuk om
iemand mee te nemen naar
ja een nieuwe stad
